Podzvičinsko

The tourist region of Podzvičinsko is to be found in the neighbourhood of the Krkonoše and Bohemian Paradise. The Krkonoše National Park and the newly declared geopark in Bohemian Paradise, which is recorded in the Unesco list, are two of the most frequently visited areas in the Czech Republic. For this reason, we would rather invite visitors to the much quieter Podzvičinsko Region, which also has a lot to offer.

Castle Pecka and surroundings

The landscape is made up of submontane uplands. The northern part belongs to the foothills of the Krkonoše Mountains with the highest peak Zvičina (671 m above sea level). Zvičina is a dominant feature of the whole area, which also gave the region its name. This peak provides beautiful views, the most attractive of which is the view over the panorama of the Krkonoše. The south of Podzvičinsko is made up of the Jičín uplands. The subsoil is made up of chalk deposits with quality sandstone, which was and still is sought-after stone for masonry and sculpture. The area surrounding Lázně Bělohrad is geologically very diverse, the birthplace of the naturalist, Dr. Antonín Frič. The peat deposits allowed for the creation of peat spas in the region. The most famous of these are Anenské lázně in Lázně Bělohrad and Velichovky.

Kuks

The area is part of the Labe basin. The Labe flows through the north-eastern part of Podzvičinsko near Dvůr Králové and Kuks. There is a dam on the river at Bílá Třemešná with a very architecturally impressive dam wall dating back to the beginning of the 20th century. The rest drains off the Bystřice and Javorka streams. Both make up a picturesque valley in places where the thickets have broken a path through. The character of the landscape is also supplemented by numerous fishponds, of which the most famous is the Vřešťovský Pond. The original submontane primeval forests were cut down in the Middle Ages and replaced mainly with pine trees. A very compact forest unit can be found in the Dvůr Králové area where it is called the Forest Kingdom.

Even tough there is not large protected are in Podzvičinsko, several natural monuments can be found here (e.g. Sýkornice, Byšičky, Miletínská bažantnice, Černá louka, Vřešťovská bažantnice, Kamenná hůra or Čertovy hrady).

ZOO Dvůr Králové

Hiking fans will come into their own in Podzvičinsko where they can enjoy the harmonious countryside interspersed with a dense network of trails and cycle paths, which as of yet are still not overloaded as in the neighbouring regions of Bohemian Paradise and the Krkonoše Mountains, which are more frequently visited by tourists. Agrotourism has been developing here recently. Some of the well-known centres are Nová Amerika by Velichovky and Jeníkov by Hořice. During the summer season, the region also offers numerous opportunities for swimming in natural outdoor pools. Some of the most sought-after are the centre near Pecky, the outdoor pool at Dachova u Hořic, the recreational fishpond by Velký Vřešťov. An indoor pool has also recently been opened in Hořice.
